The US and Russia are carrying out a massive prisoner swap, with two high profile names expected to include Ivan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan
According to sources, a massive prisoner swap is underway between the US and Russia, and is expected to include Wall Street Journal reporter Ivan Gershkovitch, former US Marine Paul Whelan, and several Americans.
According to a senior administration official, the two sides have agreed to a prisoner swap and the prisoners are expected to remain under the supervision of US authorities.It is estimated that the exchange of prisoners can be completed on Thursday.
The deal will end a nightmare that lasted more than a year for Gershkovitch. Both men were designated as being wrongfully detained by the US State Department.
Gershkovich was arrested in March 2023 during a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg. He was found guilty of espionage by a Russian court and sentenced to 16 years in prison
